Dr. Seuss Week! {Getting Started}

This week really hit home with my childhood as we celebrated the creative literature of Dr. Seuss. We had a week full of different activities to go along with some of my favourite Dr. Seuss stories! I am so looking forward to doing this again and believe me, it is worth the time and work that goes into it. To start out the week, I made plans to do one story a day with the students and developed my curriculum for the week around those books. Here is what I chose! Feel free to download the editable letter I sent home to parents the week before and make it your own!

Monday: Green Eggs & Ham
Tuesday: One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
Wednesday: The Cat in the Hat (Also, Dr. Seuss's Birthday!)
Thursday: The Lorax
Friday: Horton Hears A Who

Our classroom was decorated with the famous Truffula Trees from the Lorax which got the kids SO excited about our week ahead.

Now that the plans and decor are in place it's time for the fun part... each day with the kids!

Monday: Green Eggs and Ham Day

Today we focused our read aloud on the Dr. Seuss's book... you guessed ...it Green Eggs and Ham! And what would Green Eggs and Ham Day be without a taste test?! Today after reading our story, we predicted our own feelings of whether we would like green eggs or not. To do this each child was given an egg to colour green, cut out, and put their name on. Once finished, students decided their prediction on whether they would like the green eggs or not. Students placed their predictions on this chart here...

Then the FUN part... Taste testing!

Once we tasted the eggs, students had the opportunity to move their predictions if their results were different than their predictions! In my class it was interesting to see that all the kids that thought they would not like the eggs enjoyed them and the same kids who thought they would like the eggs decided the actually weren't fans after the taste test! Who knows... maybe it was my cooking?

Next, we incorporated our story with a fun game of Green Egg Flip (otherwise known as sunnyside up). This is a very easy game that can be used without any gym equipment. If you have a printer and a pair of scissors, you can play Green Egg Flip! My students love this game.

Green Egg Flip:

Materials: green egg cutouts, or whatever you can find to substitute!

Instructions:
1. Divide students into two equal teams. One will be the "green side up" team and the other will be the "green side down" team.
2. Scatter eggs out around the gym floor, half "green side up" and half "green side down".
3. Set your timer for 2 minutes, or any time limit you prefer.
4. On the signal to go, students who are on the "green side up" team will try to flip as many eggs over so the green side is showing while the "green side down" team will be flipping the eggs so the green side is not showing.
5. When the timer goes off have the kids freeze and count how many eggs are "green side up" and how many are "green side down". The team who has the most will earn a point! Continue the game for as many rounds as you like.

Modifications:  Students could crawl, hop, ect. to each egg instead of run. The time limit can be adjusted as well to suit your class. Students could also use spatuals to flip the eggs.

We also had some ipad fun on www.seussville.com and even made our own Dr. Seuss bookmarks! I would definitely recommend the Seussville website as it had some fun games and good emergent reader activities that my students loved! We will definitely be using that website again soon.

Tuesday: One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish Day

If you're every feeling like your math lessons need vamping up... just add food! My students went crazy over the idea of using goldfish to teach counting and addition skills, which is exactly what we did for our One Fish, Two Fish Day! The worksheets that you see pictured below are completely free. Thank you ObSEUSSed and Mrs. Ricca's Kindergarten for these incredible resources!

To end off our day, student's picked a Dr. Seuss book for our Reversed Homework Night, where instead of the students reading to their parents, the parents read to their kids! This was so fun, I'm thinking I may need to incorporate it into our regular homework more often to change things up a bit.

Wednesday: The Cat in the Hat

Okay... If I had to pick only one day that was my favourite... this would be the day! The Cat in the Hat was my absolute favourite Dr. Seuss book growing up, so I had to save it for Dr. Seuss' actual birthday! We started the day out by working on some free online Seuss math activities that you can find right HERE.

Then we celebrated by making our own pizzas for lunch! We made our pizzas into fun hat shapes and worked on patterning skills with our pepperoni and cheese! YUM.

We also worked on some cute Cat in the Hat photo props and of course celebrated with a cake! I mean... what is a birthday without cake?!

 Thursday: The Lorax

Today we focused on The Lorax! We made an adorable Lorax craft (pictured below) and learned about recycling.

My students have had a tricky time figuring out which items should go into the garbage and which into the recycling, so this was the perfect time to learn with a game! While the kids were out at recess i dumped a number of items out around the classroom. We talked about the differences between what can go in the recycling and the garbage and then went to work sorting. They got right into it, and were proud of their accomplishments at the end! Here they are pictured rushing to sort their recycling.

We also took the opportunity to talk about ways we can do our part to take care of the Earth. We had some good ideas on this one!

Friday: Horton Hears a Who

For our FINAL Dr. Seuss day we settled into watch Horton Hears a Who! What an adorable movie! We also talked about each person's value and made a craft to go along with our discussion.

This has by FAR been my favourite week to celebrate at school, and the kids loved it to! I would encourage any and EVERY teacher to do this with their kiddos.
